We joined Holt's Children of Promise Program over 6 months ago. Initially we were open only to the same need our other daughter has partly due to having experience with it and partially because the China Coordinator said not many families are open to the need. The initial estimate on wait for match was 1 - 4 months. As you can tell, it has now been longer than that. Since we are open to other needs and always have been we decided to re-do our checklist. Basically we tell the agency what needs are acceptable to us and what age child we'd like to add to our family and then when a list comes out they look for a child that fits for our family. Our openness is to a girl between 18 & 24 months or 3 to 4 1/2 years old with any of the following conditions:
ptosis
congenital heart defect
cleft lip
thalassemia - mild
brachial plexis injury
webbed / extra fingers, toes
hepatitis B
We have extensively researched these conditions and feel comfortable parenting a child with any of them. Doctors have been located nearby and we are confident she will receive the best medical treatment we can find. Now if that phone would just ring!
