When adoptive families are in Guangzhou one requirement is an exam to make sure the child doesn't have a medical issue that keeps them from flying home. Some families in the past for example, had children contract the chicken pox and therefore had to delay traveling home. Last time for us it really wasn't a big deal - temperature check, hearing check, weight, height etc. This next time it will mean the aforementioned plus also getting the child up to date on immunizations according to the U.S. schedule. This can mean up to seven shots in one day! The children do receive some vaccinations but those are based on what China feels they need. Elizabeth needed quite a few to catch up but we were able to space them out over about 6 months. This will not be the case for Isabella. She will have to either have all on the same day or some families have been able to split them up into two days. I have read blogs where the children spiked high fevers the next day so you can imagine that this is NOT good for them. Add to that the fact that they are often ineffective anyway and need to be re-done once home in the U.S. There is a bill waiting that will fix this ridiculous situation but it does not seem to be a priority for anyone in congress. If it doesn't get passed by the time we travel I certainly hope it does soon in order to save future children the unnecessary harm & stress.
