Although it was a rainy day with scattered thunderstorms we headed northwest to visit The Summer Palace. Our expected guide had to cancel at the last minute and was replaced by a very sweet young lady named Nancy who we had all to ourselves. After being accosted at the curb by many salespeople offering umbrellas and raincoats for bargain prices we walked toward the gates thirty yuan poorer but armed with umbrellas. Shortly after arriving the rain stopped and we were able to fold up the umbrellas. I took many pictures at the beautiful summer home of the emperor and his family. Elizabeth was a trooper through it all despite getting very little sleep last night although she did actually remain in her bed the entire night. We walked down the very long corridor and enjoyed the many paintings including two depicting the story of Mulan and the popular Monkey King. Some may also recognize the empresses marble boat. At the end of the tour we enjoyed a nice ride
across the lake in a dragon boat.
